Ahead of the Niger Delta Sports Festival, which will take place from April 1 to April 9, 2025, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the final screening of Ondo athletes has been concluded.
The process, which was held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, saw numerous athletes participating in trials for various games such as basketball, volleyball, handball, boxing, traditional wrestling, chess, tennis, and weightlifting, among others.
It was a moment full of zeal, as athletes from all 18 local councils converged at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure for the final trials before camping and departing for the main event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The screening was led by the state's professional coaches, who coordinated the selection process.
Seun Ogunkoya, one of Ondo's nine ambassadors for the Niger Delta Sports Festival, commended the level of preparedness and commitment shown by the athletes and coaches in striving for success.
He also praised the liaison committee for creating an enabling environment for the trials to succeed.
"I think this is my first time seeing potential athletes in the state coming out for the trials. From what I’m seeing, we are good to go. My expectation is to be part of the victory, and from my observation, we are ready," he said.
Also, one of the coaches of the Ondo State Swimming Association, Monday Mobgojuri, stated that the association had already filled all the required categories for the competition.
Mobgojuri expressed confidence that the athletes being prepared for the tournament would win medals for the state.
Volleyball Coach, Oluwaseun Afuye, expressed satisfaction with the selected athletes, noting that he had scouted talent from the grassroots level before the final screening.
While commending the organizers, he highlighted that the event would engage the youth meaningfully and help them reach their full potential.
Handball Coach, Ronke Saliu, noted that the high turnout showed that Team Ondo was on the right track to pursue every possible victory.
She expressed confidence that those who made the final cut would perform to standard and make Ondo State proud.
Boxing Head Coach, Osifo Moses, stated that the event would provide the necessary platforms for youth in Ondo State to showcase their hidden talents.
Other coaches advised those selected to remain dedicated, disciplined, and committed to their goals, urging them to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship during the competition.
