Lotte Kopecky Wins Nokere Koerse in Belguim Four Days After Brother's Death

Just four days after the passing of her brother, Lotte Kopecky led a miraculous one-two for SD Worx in the women's Nokere Koerse in Belgium.
Kopecky was the best competitor in the field; she launched several attacks before breaking free in the closing stages of the race to claim an emotional victory. She finished second at Strade Bianche and won Omloop Het Nieuwsblad earlier this season.
Despite not being on the start list, Kopecky was declared to ride the one-day race on Tuesday.
“I had made the choice to race today, last week,” said Kopecky. “I really wanted to race no matter what.
“It was our goal to make it a hard race and I think we did."
With 84 kilometers remaining on the Tiegemberg, a combative Kopecky attempted her first assault, but the effort was quickly repulsed.
The peloton eventually caught her and Anna Henderson of Jumbo-Visma when they tried again. Following several assaults from various riders, Kopecky launched a third attack on the cobbled Lange Aststraat.
With 6 kilometers remaining, the Belgian made a dramatic solo breakaway that proved to be the race's turning point. Marta Bastianelli of UAE Team ADQ finished third, and she defeated teammate Lorena Wiebes of SD Worx by a margin of 28 seconds.
