Lorena Wiebes, a top Dutch sprint cyclist, withdraws from the Tour de France Femmes
Posted : 27 July 2023
SD Worx has announced that Lorena Wiebes, the 24-year-old Dutch sprint cyclist, has been forced to withdraw from the remaining stages of the Tour de France Femmes. Wiebes is highly regarded as one of the top riders in single-day and Classic events, and she had already achieved first and second place finishes in the 2023 edition during two sprint stages.
Unfortunately, stomach problems have plagued Wiebes, leading to her departure from the Tour before the start of stage 5 on Thursday. Her team expressed their regret on their official Twitter account, stating that she's suffering from stomach issues and won't be able to participate in the Onet-Le-Château stage.
Danny Stam, the team's spokesperson, acknowledged that it's a significant loss for Team SD Worx, as there were still sprint opportunities ahead. Nevertheless, the team prioritizes the health and well-being of their athletes above all else.
Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes was a mostly flat course covering 126.1km, starting in Onet-Le-Chateau and concluding in Albi, to the northeast of Toulouse.
In the previous stage (stage 4), Yara Kastelijn of Fenix-Deceuninck secured the stage win. Currently, Wiebes' teammate Lotte Kopecky holds a 43-second lead over another SD Worx rider, Demi Vollering, in the second position.
