London Marathon 2023: Sifan Hassan and Kelvin Kiptum triumph with outstanding performances
Posted : 24 April 2023
Eliud Kipchoge's track record was broken by Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum, who finished second in the men's London Marathon in the second-fastest time ever.
With a time of two hours, one minute, and 25 seconds, the 23-year-old finished just 16 seconds below Kipchoge's world record.
To win the women's race, Sifan Hassan also put out a tremendous performance.
The 30-year-old Dutch Olympic track champion battled through a hip issue to triumph on her first try at the distance.
To defeat fellow countryman Geoffrey Kamworor, who came in second, by over three minutes, Kiptum cut one minute and 12 seconds off Kipchoge's previous course record.
Mo Farah, a four-time Olympic champion from Great Britain, finished eighth in his final London Marathon and announced that he will call it quits from competitive running during the Great North Run in September.
Hassan, who won the 10,000m and 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, dropped back early in the women's race due to a hip issue but managed to recover.
She finished the race in a sprint and won in two hours, 18 minutes, and 33 seconds.
