London Marathon 2023 Opens to Thousands of Athletes: Mo Farah and Eilish McColgan Compete
Posted : 19 April 2023
With hundreds of runners joining Mo Farah and Eilish McColgan at the starting line on Sunday, the London Marathon is back in its customary spring location.
The marathon is back in April after three years of being held in October because to the Covid-19 epidemic.
The 26.2 miles are anticipated to be covered by some 40,000 participants, who will raise millions of pounds for charity.
Due to a hip ailment, Mo Farah missed the 2022 London Marathon. This will be his first marathon since 2019.
The four-time Olympic champion enters the race after a dismal seventh-place showing in the Port-Gentil 10km in Gabon, where he predicted in January that 2023 would likely be his final year of competitive racing before retiring.
Four of the five fastest marathon runners in history, including Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele and Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum, will compete against the 40-year-old Briton.
Amos Kipruto, the defending champion, and Tamirat Tola, the world champion, will also compete.
Eilish McColgan, whose mother Liz won the London Marathon in 1996, will compete in her debut marathon after having to withdraw due to illness last year.
The 32-year-old Scot had a good track season in 2022, winning the 10,000-meter gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and breaking her own British record to win the Berlin Half Marathon earlier this month.
A strong women's field includes Kenya's Brigid Kosgei, the current world record holder in the marathon, Peres Jepchirchir, an Olympic champion, and Yalemzerf Yehualaw, the winner in 2022.
