In front of a sold-out crowd of 50,000 at the London Diamond League, Zharnel Hughes achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the 30-year British 200m record. The 28-year-old sprinter clocked an impressive time of 19.73 seconds, surpassing the previous mark of 19.94 set by John Regis at the 1993 World Championships, by 0.21 seconds.
Although his record-breaking performance earned him third place in the race, the victory went to American world 200m champion Noah Lyles, who finished with a blistering time of 19.47 seconds.
This achievement marks the second national record Hughes has shattered this season. Just a few weeks ago in June, he made headlines by smashing the 100m record in New York with a lightning-fast time of 9.83 seconds, surpassing Linford Christie's previous record set in 1993.
Earlier this month, Hughes claimed the UK 200m title in Manchester with a time of 19.77 seconds, but the wind speed during that race was deemed illegal, nullifying the record. However, his latest performance at the London Diamond League solidifies his place as one of Britain's most exceptional sprinters.
