Botswana's Letsile Tebogo delivered a standout performance at the Diamond League meeting in Rome on Friday, surpassing Christian Coleman to win the 100 meters with an impressive time of 9.87 seconds. The 21-year-old, who recently claimed the Olympic 200m title, appeared relaxed as he glanced at his competitors before crossing the finish line. Coleman, who did not qualify for the US team for the upcoming Paris Games, finished second in 9.92 seconds, while Paris bronze medalist Fred Kerley secured third place with a time of 9.95 seconds.
Home favorite Marcell Jacobs, who unexpectedly won gold at the delayed Tokyo 2021 Games and finished fifth in Paris, struggled during the race. Jacobs crossed the line ninth and last with a time of 10.20 seconds. Reflecting on his performance, Jacobs expressed disappointment, noting that he couldn't run faster and chose not to risk injury. Despite the unsatisfactory result, he appreciated the opportunity to compete in Rome before a supportive home crowd.
In other events at the Stadio Olimpico, which had recently hosted a notable European Championships, Kenya's Faith Kipyegon triumphed in the women's 1,500 meters with a time of 3 minutes 52.89 seconds. Although her performance was impressive, Kipyegon fell short of her world record, partly due to pacing issues. She acknowledged that the world record attempt was unlikely given the recent Olympic Games, but remained satisfied with her victory.
