Lawal, Didih, headline Team Nigeria to 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship

A total of six lifters and two officials have departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, en route to Moka, Mauritius, for the 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship.


The contingent comprises four female and two male lifters who are poised to compete in six categories at Africa’s flagship weightlifting event.


The female athletes include Didih Onome Omolola (55kg), Lawal Rafiatu Folashade (59kg), Ayodele Ruth Imoleayo (64kg), and Matthew Sarah Ovayioza (76kg).


The two male athletes are Tuesday Emmanuel (67kg) and Umoafia Edidiong Joseph (73kg).


The 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship will take place in Moka, Mauritius, from April 20th to 28th. The team arrived on Sunday, April 20th, and the opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 23rd.


Competition will begin on Thursday with two Nigerian lifters, Didih Onome Omolola in the 55kg category and Lawal Rafiatu Folashade in the 59kg category, competing in the morning. Tuesday Emmanuel (67kg) and Umoafia Edidiong Joseph (73kg) will compete from 2 p.m. Nigeria time.


Nigeria’s participation in the championship will conclude on Friday with Ayodele Ruth Imoleayo in the 64kg category and Matthew Sarah Ovayioza in the 76kg women’s category.


Nigeria enters the competition following an impressive performance at the 2024 edition in Egypt, where the team won eleven medals, comprising six gold and five silver.
