Larry Nassar stabbed in back and chest during a confrontation at US Penitentiary Coleman

Posted : 10 July 2023
Larry Nassar, a disgraced sports doctor who was found guilty of assaulting female gymnasts, was stabbed at the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida during an altercation with another prisoner.

According to reports, Nassar was stabbed in the back and chest, but his condition is stable. Despite not confirming Nassar's name, the Federal Bureau of Prisons did report that one inmate had been attacked and had received emergency medical assistance. An internal inquiry is proceeding, and the FBI has been alerted.

Nassar, 59, was sentenced in 2017 to 60 years in prison for child pornography charges and later received additional sentences for sexually assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic medalists. Following the attack, authorities transferred Nassar to a maximum-security federal prison in Florida.

Former gymnast Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar, expressed her grief over the situation on Twitter, stating that the women she spoke with are not rejoicing but are mourning the destruction caused by Nassar's actions.

Nassar's abuse occurred during his tenure at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. Multiple athletes testified that they had reported the abuse to adults, including coaches and trainers, but it went unreported.

More than 100 women, including Simone Biles, sought compensation for the FBI's failure to stop Nassar when allegations against him were first brought to their attention. Michigan State agreed to pay $500 million, and USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee reached a $380 million settlement in response to the abuse scandal.
