The Lagos State government pledged on Tuesday to provide increased support for the annual Lagos Women Run as part of its commitment to empowering more people across the state.
Lekan Fatodu of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) made this commitment at the media briefing for the 9th edition of the Lagos Women Run, held in the boardroom of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.

During the briefing, Fatodu stated that the vision of the organisers for the 10km Lagos Women Run aligns with the state government’s purpose-driven leadership.
“There is no more powerful tool for awareness than what we are doing now. I must commend everyone for being partners in progress and for their strong support of this initiative.
“I can assure you that the LSSC will add something even bigger to this competition to make it even better.
"This effort is critically important as it addresses key societal issues, particularly women's empowerment.
“For an idea to last nine years, and as we approach the tenth with great optimism, we must unite in our support. We are fully behind this project,” he said.
Fatodu also noted that the organisers’ commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aligns with one of the state government's primary areas of interest.
“The government is highly interested in the Sustainable Development Goals, which the Lagos Women Run has championed over the years, so we extend our thanks to them.
“These goals cannot be achieved by the government alone; they require everyone’s support. When we see individuals active in this space, we ensure we support them.
“We will find ways within our power to ensure that the Lagos Women Run receives the right support so that, in the years to come, we see even more benefits from the race,” he said.
Solomon Alao, Chairman of the Lagos State Athletics Association (LSAA), said that the success of the Lagos Women Run is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
“It is crucial to recognize that the success of the Lagos Women Run is a collective responsibility. It is a journey without a clear finish line.
“We continue to run, knowing the finish line is within reach. The reason we keep running is to ensure that our message is well understood.
“We are at the forefront of the conversation and decision-making because, as a government, we cannot do this alone. It is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
Alao also highlighted that the drive to prioritize women’s empowerment in society, led by the run’s organisers, is a valuable cause.
“I am impressed with the adoption of this year’s theme, which aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals.
“The focus on a zero-waste environment is a worthy theme, as it provides insights into our progress and current position.
“I am encouraged when I see initiatives created by the private sector. Reflecting on our journey, from addressing breast cancer and social inclusion to addressing societal shortcomings, is meaningful.
“As we prioritize sustainability as part of our efforts, there is no better platform than the Women Run to highlight its importance.
"This platform, particularly focused on women, has done an excellent job by incorporating about 12 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals into this project.
“The Sustainable Development Goals represent a global commitment to end extreme poverty, protect our planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
“There is no better way to view this women’s run than as a comprehensive platform bringing together people from Ojota, Ikoyi, and various backgrounds to share ideas and enjoy a common purpose.
“As this is the 9th edition, we are considering ways to further support the run, such as sponsoring a ‘Pasta Party’ for the 10th edition.
"Many runners are unaware of the best diets to follow before a race, while some think that fasting will make them lighter. We want to help them find the best approach,” he said.
Tayo Popoola, one of the organisers of the Lagos Women Run, stated that the theme of the 2024 edition, “Run with a Difference,” was carefully chosen to address current challenges facing women in society.
She also assured that the organisers remain committed to safeguarding the interests of women.
She confirmed that everything is set for the 9th edition, which will take place at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).
The 2024 Lagos Women Run will cover 10km, starting from TBS at 7 a.m. on Nov. 9 and ending at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.
