Four-time African champion Anuoluwapo Opeyori advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating an Equatorial Guinea player at the ongoing Lagos Badminton Classics at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The game took an unexpected turn, with the Equatorial Guinea player, Solomon Obiegue, demonstrating determination and challenging the champion.
Knowing Obiegue’s strength, Opeyori’s initial plan was to test his stamina before ending the match with an 18-21, 21-5, 21-7 (2-1) victory.
In an interview, Opeyori said he played below his level but managed to make it to the quarter-finals.
He also mentioned that his experience at the Olympics had been valuable, and he wanted to share that experience with the younger generation, helping to build a better future for the sport after his retirement.
Obiegue expressed that he was honored to share the stage with the African champion.
He added that his ambition is to be part of the African badminton dream of winning an Olympic medal.
Opeyori advised young players to participate in competitions like this to accumulate points and improve their level of play.
