During the event, LSAA Chairman Solomon Alao stated that the association had proposed and initiated policies to secure a rightful place for athletics in Lagos.
Alao mentioned that the position of Technical Director became vacant after former director Enefiok Udo-Obong was appointed as an advisor to the Saudi Arabian athletics team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Following his assignment, Udo-Obong was retained as the Technical Advisor for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Athletics Development Program.
"The Technical Department of the Lagos State Athletics Association became vacant after the former director left for Saudi Arabia.
"Udo-Obong continues as our Technical Advisor abroad, but moving forward, we needed to revamp the department for progress and future initiatives.
"We've ensured that we are fortifying the technical department," he said.
While praising Udo-Obong’s contributions, Alao noted that he had left a lasting legacy.
"We are thrilled with Udo-Obong's contributions, which led to his appointment in Saudi Arabia.
"His efforts have driven many of our developmental programs in Lagos over the years.
"We've hosted more competitions than any other association nationwide, providing scholarships to over 50 athletes to study in the USA, particularly through the Deji Tinubu Lagos Classics," he said.
Alao stated that Otegbeye’s appointment was ideal for the association.
"We’ve strengthened the Technical Department by appointing one of the best in athletics, Otegbeye, as the director.
"We have also appointed Abbey Ibrahim to the newly created position of Performance Director, while Billy Disu will serve as Program Director.
"Otegbeye will lead the Technical Department, with Ibrahim and Disu supporting her. Disu will also assist the Chairman’s office, helping formulate programs and managing stakeholders to ensure smooth operations," he said.
Otegbeye, a seasoned athlete and University of Lagos (UNILAG) lecturer, expressed her commitment to the association’s vision.
"My contribution to LSAA aligns with the chairman’s vision, which is to establish an athletics culture in Lagos that other states can emulate.
"The vision extends beyond sports; it focuses on empowering athletes for life after sports.
"We aim to support those wishing to pursue higher education with scholarships and assist others in learning trades.
"Our goal is not only to help them excel in athletics but to empower them for the future, making Lagos a model for other states," she said.
Otegbeye, a scholar at UNILAG’s Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Physical and Health Education from the same institution.
She is also an athletics coach at UNILAG, where she has led school athletes in various local and international competitions, including the Nigeria University Games (NUGA).
