Jacob Kiplimo made history in Barcelona by becoming the first athlete to complete a half marathon in under 57 minutes, smashing the world record by a remarkable 48 seconds. The 24-year-old Ugandan clocked an astonishing time of 56 minutes and 42 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 57:30 set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia last October.
This achievement marks the largest single improvement in the men's half marathon world record, solidifying Kiplimo's place among the sport’s elite.
Reflecting on his performance, Kiplimo expressed his surprise and excitement at the achievement. The former Olympic and World Championships bronze medallist in the 10,000m admitted that while he aimed for a strong race, he had not expected to break the world record.
"I started very strong in the first two kilometres to get away from my rivals. As the kilometres passed and I saw that I was going at record pace, I told myself that I had to maintain that pace no matter what it took," he said. His performance was aided by ideal conditions, with a temperature of 13ºC and no wind.
Kiplimo also set a world best of 39 minutes and 47 seconds for 15km during the race, further demonstrating his dominance. His compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor secured second place with a time of 58:44, while Kenya’s Samuel Mailu finished third in 59:40. The record-breaking run cements Kiplimo’s status as one of the finest long-distance runners of his generation.
