Kenyan runner, Edwin Kibet, has emerged as the winner of the 10th anniversary of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon after completing the race in a time of 2:14:19:73.
Kibet dethroned his compatriot, 33-year-old Bernard Sang, who won the 2024 edition with a time of 2:16:54.
A regular participant in the 42km Gold Label marathon, Kibet defeated about 60 other elite runners to claim the $50,000 prize money.
East African runners dominated the male category, with Kenyans securing the first, second, and third positions. Kiptgon Nehemiah finished second with a time of 2:16:37:47, earning $40,000, while Bernard Sang secured third place with a time of 2:17:17:13, winning $30,000.
The Kenyans have previously won the marathon in 2016, 2017, 2020, 2021, 2024, and now 2025.
In the female category, Ethiopian runners dominated, with Guta Hirpa winning first place with a time of [time missing]. Another Ethiopian, Alemenesh Guta, the 2023 winner, finished second, while Kenyan Jerono Peris took third place.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his address at the 10th anniversary of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, stated that his government would continue prioritizing sports as an economic stimulant.
"We will continue to support sports because of its immense benefits as a stimulant for economic growth," he said. "Also, Lagos will bid to host the next Youth Games by the grace of God."
According to NAN, Kibet won the star prize of $50,000, while second place earned $40,000 and third place $30,000, the same as the women’s category.
Dignitaries at the 10th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon included Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), NSC Director General Bukola Olopade, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Prince Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, and Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) Lekan Fatodu, among others.
