Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum shatters Men's Marathon World record in Chicago, Sifan Hassan dominates Women's Race
Posted : 08 October 2023
Kenyan athlete Kelvin Kiptum achieved a remarkable feat by shattering the men's marathon world record in Chicago, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge's previous record by over 30 seconds. Kiptum, at the age of 23, completed the marathon in an astonishing time of two hours and 35 seconds, a significant improvement from Kipchoge's previous record of 2:01:09 set in Berlin in September 2022. Kiptum expressed his joy after the race, stating that he hadn't expected to break the world record on that day.
Dutch runner Sifan Hassan also made headlines in the female event by recording the second-fastest women's marathon time in history. Her time of 2:13:44 was only surpassed by the record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa in Berlin the previous month. Hassan's impressive performance secured her victory in the women's race.
Kelvin Kiptum's achievement not only broke the Chicago Marathon record but also brought the possibility of breaking the two-hour barrier in the marathon closer. Kiptum's win was his third consecutive victory in marathon races, following his debut win in Valencia and his course record-setting victory in the London Marathon earlier this year. His remarkable run has solidified his status as a world-record holder and a potential future star in the sport.
