Kenyan Faith Kipyegon breaks world record in women's mile at Monaco Diamond League

Posted : 22 July 2023
Kenya's Faith Kipyegon achieved a remarkable feat at the Monaco Diamond League by breaking the women's mile record, clocking an impressive 4 minutes and 7.64 seconds. This achievement marks her third world record in the past two months.

The 29-year-old athlete surpassed the previous record of 4 minutes and 12.33 seconds set by Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan in 2019, also at the Monaco event.

In the previous month, Kipyegon had already shattered world records in both the 1500 meters and 5000 meters during races in Florence and Paris. Her outstanding performance in Monaco was met with immense emotion and joy, as she acknowledged the support of her fellow competitors.

Kipyegon expressed her gratitude and stated, "I can see that they are all happy for me and it is so emotional. It is a blessing. It just does not happen every time you run. I have to say thanks God for this."

The Kenyan athlete had set her sights on breaking the 1500 meters world record at the beginning of the season. However, her exceptional form and dedication led her to not only achieve that goal but also rewrite records in the 1 mile and 5000 meters events.

In the Monaco Diamond League, Ireland's Ciara Mageean secured the second spot with a time of 4 minutes and 14.8 seconds, but it was Kipyegon's day to shine as she solidified her place among the world's best athletes.

With her relentless pursuit of excellence and numerous world records under her belt, Faith Kipyegon has proven herself as one of the most exceptional middle-distance runners in the world. Her remarkable performances continue to inspire and captivate the global athletics community.
