Posted : 04 August 2023
The roads of Katowice witnessed a thrilling individual time trial, showcasing the intense competition at this year's Tour de Pologne. Matej Mohorič and João Almeida were separated by mere hundredths of a second in the general classification after almost 1000 km of racing.
In the time trial, it was Mattia Cattaneo of Soudal Quick-Step who emerged as the fastest, surpassing João Almeida and Geraint Thomas with an impressive average speed of 51.965 km/h over the 16.6-kilometer route.
For Mattia Cattaneo, the victory marked his first success in the World Tour, and he expressed his happiness at defeating such formidable opponents. "It's always nice to win, but when you beat such good players, it tastes even better," said the elated Italian cyclist. He had confidence in his legs and put in his best effort to claim the victory.
Despite finishing 11th in the individual ride, current leader Matej Mohorič managed to maintain his hold on the leader's jersey, finishing 25 seconds behind the winner and 12 seconds behind João Almeida.
Mohorič admitted that he might have saved too much in the first part of the distance but gave everything in the challenging second part to retain the jersey. With both riders now having the same time, the battle for the overall victory is set for the final stage.
Unlike previous editions, the winner of the Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour has not yet been determined, leaving room for excitement and uncertainty. Mohorič holds a slim advantage over Almeida, Rafał Majka, and Michał Kwiatkowski, setting the stage for a thrilling finale from Zabrze to Krakow. The Tour de Pologne UCI World Tour promises an exciting climax as the riders vie for the top spot on the podium.
