Pole vaulter Juho Alasaari thrilled the home crowd at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo, Finland, by securing Finland's third gold medal of the championships.
The 19-year-old achieved a remarkable feat, improving his personal best by 11 centimetres to reach 5.71m and claim an unexpected victory in the men's pole vault.
Alasaari's journey to the top was highlighted by his resilient performance. After a final-attempt clearance at 5.66m, he took control of the competition with a flawless first-time clearance at 5.71m.
Despite subsequent failures at the height, Alasaari's lead was secure, setting the stage for the pre-event favorite, European bronze medalist Pål Haugen Lillefosse from Norway, and France's Robin Emig to challenge at 5.76m.
However, both Lillefosse and Emig couldn't match Alasaari's performance, with two failures each at 5.76m. As a result, the gold medal belonged to the young Finn. Emig claimed the silver on countback, with their best clearances at 5.66m, and Lillefosse settled for the bronze.
After the event, Alasaari expressed his joy and gratitude for the overwhelming support from the local spectators. He humorously mentioned that he had half-jokingly predicted his victory to Lillefosse before the competition, and to his surprise, it became a reality.
The gold medal and the incredible atmosphere in Espoo left Alasaari with an unforgettable and magical experience.
