Johnson-Thompson, Hunter Bell Headline UK Athletics Indoor Championships

Posted : 21 February 2025

Some of Britain’s top athletes, including Olympic medalists Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Georgia Hunter Bell, will compete for national titles at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham this weekend. The two-day event, also serves as the British trials for the upcoming European Athletics Indoor Championships, set to take place in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, from 6-9 March.

Johnson-Thompson, who secured a long-awaited Olympic silver in the heptathlon at Paris 2024, is set to compete in the 60m hurdles and shot put events at Utilita Arena. Defending British indoor 1500m champion Hunter Bell, who won Olympic bronze, will aim to retain her title, while world indoor pole vault champion Molly Caudery also joins the lineup.

Laura Muir, a dominant force in middle-distance running, is targeting her 10th British title in the 3,000m, and former world 1500m champion Jake Wightman is among the notable names in action.

The women’s 400m event promises to be highly competitive, featuring Olympic relay medalists Amber Anning, Victoria Ohuruogu, Lina Nielsen, and Hannah Kelly. Athletes finishing in the top two of each final will secure a place at the European Championships, provided they have met the qualification standard or obtained a high enough world ranking in their event.

However, Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson will be absent from the competition after sustaining a hamstring tear earlier this month. Following the European Indoor Championships, top athletes will turn their focus to the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, scheduled for 21-23 March.
