Leading ultra-runner who was banned from a race for using a car claims she made a "massive error" when she accepted the third-place trophy.
Joasia Zakrzewski claimed that her acts were "not intentional" and that a misunderstanding was to blame for the event.
Dr. Zakrzewski, a resident of Dumfries, participated in the Manchester to Liverpool 50-mile race on April 7.
She traveled roughly 2.5 miles before continuing the race in her automobile, it was later revealed.
The 47-year-old GP described how she had become disoriented on the route about the halfway point when her calf started to hurt and she began to hobble.
She decided to withdraw from the race after the agony got so unbearable that she met a friend on the side of the road and requested a ride in his car to the next checkpoint.
"When I got to the checkpoint I told them I was pulling out and that I had been in the car, and they said 'you will hate yourself if you stop'," Dr Zakrzewski said.
"I agreed to carry on in a non-competitive way.
"I made sure I didn't overtake the runner in front when I saw her as I didn't want to interfere with her race."
She received a medal and a wooden trophy for third place after crossing the finish line, and she posed for photos.
The runner, who had flown in the previous evening from Australia, admitted: "I made a massive error accepting the trophy and should have handed it back.
