Jamaica and the United States are set to reignite their sprint rivalry at the Stade de France as old tensions resurface during the Paris Olympics athletics program, beginning this week. Unlike the Tokyo Olympics, which emphasized sportsmanship amidst the global pandemic, the Paris games are expected to feature intense competition and fierce rivalries. US world champions Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson will compete against a mix of talented newcomers and established stars from Jamaica in the 100 meters, setting the stage for thrilling showdowns.
Noah Lyles emphasized the importance of intentional rivalries, stating that they need to be nurtured properly to maintain public interest. Jamaica's men, who were absent from the Tokyo final, are anticipated to make a significant impact in Paris.
Rising star Oblique Seville recently defeated Lyles in Kingston, while Kishane Thompson made headlines with a world-leading 9.77 seconds at the Jamaican national championships. On the women's side, Sha'Carri Richardson, who missed the Tokyo Games due to a positive cannabis test, will compete against Jamaica's seasoned athletes Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson.
The men's 1,500 meters will see defending champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen resuming his rivalry with Britain's Josh Kerr, who thwarted him at the world championships last year. The two athletes have exchanged heated remarks since then, with Ingebrigtsen downplaying Kerr's abilities and Kerr eager to prove himself once again. Their last encounter at the Prefontaine Classic saw Kerr triumph over Ingebrigtsen, promising a highly competitive race in Paris.
The 400 meters hurdles will also feature a highly anticipated rematch among Norwegian world record holder Karsten Warholm, American Rai Benjamin, and Brazilian Alison dos Santos, who finished first, second, and third respectively in Tokyo. Their rivalry has only intensified, with Dos Santos winning gold at the world championships in Eugene in 2022 and Warholm claiming victory in Budapest last year.
Benjamin, confident after his recent win at the Monaco Diamond League, has vowed to leave his mark in Paris. The Olympic athletics program kicks off on August 1, promising a series of exciting and competitive events.
