Posted : 08 October 2023
Jake Jarman made history as he became Great Britain's first-ever winner of the world vault title at the World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp.
The 21-year-old European champion scored an impressive 15.050 points for the gold medal, outperforming American Khoi Young (14.849) and Ukraine's Nazar Chepurnyi, who claimed bronze (14.766).
Jarman's victory was a significant achievement, and he expressed his disbelief at the accomplishment, stating, "It doesn't feel real yet. I just can't believe it."
Jarman's success was marked by his flawless execution of the challenging Yonekura vault, a feat that had been years in the making. He landed it perfectly, earning a substantial opening score of 15.4.
His second attempt also displayed strength, with a score of 14.7, securing victory by a margin of 0.201 points. Jarman's dedication to mastering the vault paid off, and he described it as a precise and nerve-wracking skill.
This victory not only brought Jarman his first individual medal at the world level but also highlighted his potential as he prepares for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
His impressive track record includes four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, European gold in vault, and a world bronze medal in the team event. Jake Jarman's historic win is a significant moment for British gymnastics and sets the stage for his future successes on the international stage.
