Italy leads 9.5 points in 1st Division Silesia 2023 with Bol, Ingvaldsen, and Swoboda victories

Italy took an early lead of 9.5 points in the 1st Division of the Silesia 2023 European Athletics Team Championships.
The opening day saw impressive performances, including championship record-breaking runs by 400m athletes Femke Bol and Havard Ingvaldsen, as well as a notable victory for home sprinter Ewa Swoboda in the women's 100m event. Swoboda's win, with a time of 11.09 seconds, marked a high point for the defending champions.
Bol lived up to expectations by winning the women's 400m in 49.82 seconds, setting a new championship record and becoming the first athlete to run sub-50 seconds in this event at the championships.
Ingvaldsen also delivered a strong performance, clocking 44.88 seconds in the men's 400m and narrowly missing his national record. Italy's Samuele Ceccarelli secured their fourth victory in the men's 100m, equaling his personal best of 10.13 seconds.
Italy's early dominance was further solidified by maximum points contributions from Sara Fantini in the women's hammer throw, Nadia Battocletti in the women's 5000m, and Tobia Bocchi in the men's triple jump. As a result, Italy led the standings with 141 points, followed by Great Britain with 131.50 points and reigning champions Poland with 127 points.
In the men's pole vault, veteran pole vaulter Piotr Lisek showcased his competitive spirit but finished third on countback. The event was eventually won by Menno Vloon from the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Anita Wlodarczyk, Poland's triple Olympic champion in the women's hammer throw, observed the event as an interested spectator and event ambassador.
The day also witnessed victories in the women's shot put and discus events. Auriol Dongmo of Portugal emerged victorious in the shot put, while Germany's Kristin Pudenz claimed the top spot in the discus throw with a season's best of 66.84m.
Italy's strong performances on the opening day positioned them as the frontrunners, setting the stage for an exciting continuation of the competition.
