Israel's Blessing Afrifah secured a historic victory in the men's 200m, clinching the first-ever gold medal for Israel at the European U23 Championships.
Despite the challenge from the fast Dutchman Raphael Bouju, Afrifah managed to hold on to his lead and crossed the finish line with a mere 0.01-second advantage, posting a time of 20.67 (-1.1m/s).
This success came after Afrifah's triumph at the world U20 championships. Bouju, competing in his eighth race of the championships, earned his second silver medal, having previously secured second place in the men's 100m. Switzerland's Timothé Mumenthaler secured the bronze with a time of 20.85.
Elena Kulichenko brought glory to Cyprus, claiming the nation's first-ever gold medal at the European U23 Championships in the women's high jump. As the top-ranked athlete, Kulichenko displayed remarkable consistency, clearing every height on her first attempt up to 1.89m. She then managed to secure victory by clearing 1.91m on her second attempt.
Reflecting on her victory, Kulichenko attributed her success to her ability to maintain focus on her own performance rather than being distracted by her competitors.
Born in Russia but currently training and studying in the United States, the well-traveled athlete showcased her talent and determination on the European stage, earning a memorable and historic gold medal for Cyprus.
