The EWF Secretariat conducted an interview with the Portuguese weightlifting team, celebrating their remarkable success at the 2023 EWF European Youth and U15 Championships in Chisinau, Moldova. Athletes Joana Antunes and Rafael Candeias, under the guidance of their coaches Paulo and Rita Antunes, shared insights into their preparations, training, and future plans.
Joana, who won the silver medal, expressed her happiness and pride in achieving her goal for Portugal. She discussed overcoming obstacles and criticism about weightlifting for children, emphasizing her determination to succeed. Her parents, who also serve as coaches, played a crucial role in her growth as an athlete.
Rafael, the bronze medalist, shared his nervousness before the competition but focused on the movement during his successful lift. His parents inspired him to start weightlifting and support him in his athletic journey.
The coaches, Rita and Paulo Antunes, explained their involvement in weightlifting through an invitation from the Portuguese Weightlifting Federation. They strive to make training enjoyable and nurturing, aiming to shape not only athletes but also good human beings.
The success of the Portuguese athletes at the Championships was a significant accomplishment for weightlifting in the country, marking historical medals. However, the Federation faces challenges due to a lack of funding. They hope the recognition of their achievements will lead to more support and development for the sport.
Despite the financial difficulties, they plan to encourage younger generations to join weightlifting through athlete recruitment initiatives and training programs. They also intend to raise awareness among parents and physical education teachers.
As the President of the Portuguese Weightlifting Federation, Vitor Estevao expressed pride in the athletes' achievements and the positive impact on the weightlifting community. He hopes the success will inspire further growth in the sport.
The interview concluded with the coaches' aspirations for the future, anticipating the next World Championship in Saudi Arabia and the need for funding to support the athletes' participation in international competitions. They are planning activities to raise funds and continue promoting weightlifting in Portugal.
