Ingebrigtsen Defends European Indoor 3,000m Title, Equals Record

Posted : 10 March 2025

Jakob Ingebrigtsen successfully defended his European indoor 3,000m title, securing double gold at three consecutive editions of the championships. The Norwegian, who had already claimed victory in the 1,500m earlier in the competition, crossed the finish line in 7 minutes 48.37 seconds. At just 24 years old, he equaled the record for the most European indoor gold medals, joining Soviet-Ukrainian legend Valeriy Borzov with seven titles.

Ingebrigtsen's dominance highlighted an eventful final session in Apeldoorn, which also featured Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh clinching a third high jump title and Dutch star Femke Bol leading her team to gold in the women’s 4x400m relay.

Despite starting conservatively at the back of the pack, Ingebrigtsen gradually moved forward as the 15-lap race unfolded. With five laps remaining, he increased the tempo, positioning himself ahead alongside Britain’s George Mills, Dutch teenager Niels Laros, and Sweden’s Andreas Almgren. As the race entered its final stages, Ingebrigtsen surged ahead with two-and-a-half laps to go.

Mills attempted to keep up but ultimately faded in the closing 100 meters, allowing Ingebrigtsen to cross the line comfortably with a raised finger in celebration. While his winning time was well short of his own outdoor world record of 7:17.55, it was more than enough to cement his place as Europe's dominant distance runner.

Mills finished second in 7:49.41, while France’s Azeddine Habz took bronze, narrowly edging out Almgren in a sprint to the line. This marked Habz’s second medal of the championships after securing silver in the 1,500m. Meanwhile, Italy’s Zainab Dosso delivered a standout performance in the women’s 60m, setting a world-leading time of 7.01 seconds.

As Ingebrigtsen now shifts focus to the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Nanjing and the outdoor World Championships in Tokyo later this year, his continued success reaffirms his status as one of the sport’s most dominant figures.
