In its efforts to unleash sporting potential in Anambra State, the Thanos Charity Foundation will hold the first Anambra Marathon event on Saturday, March 16, 2024.
The event starts at 7:00 am on Saturday. Athletes will begin at Ogbunike Tollgate and finish at Emmaus House, Awka, covering approximately 35 kilometers along the Onitsha-Awka Expressway.
The winner receives N1,000,000, the first runner-up N500,000, and the second runner-up N300,000.
Prince Ugochukwu Ifeanyi, President of the Thanos Charity Foundation, announced free and open participation in the marathon.
He explained that based on security recommendations and observed circumstances, the starting point was shifted to Ogbunike Tollgate for better management, security, and participant safety.
Ugochukwu provided event details:
"The route follows the expressway."
"Tag numbers and marathon procedures will be finalized on Friday."
"We arranged for three ambulances with medical personnel to ensure athlete safety."
"We publicized the event through national newspapers and social media, resulting in a significant registration volume."
Ugochukwu, the Thanos Foundation leader, also mentioned their collaboration with various partners, including the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, the Anambra State Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and the Anambra State Ministry of Health, to ensure the event's success.
Explaining the event's concept, Ugochukwu expressed strong support for the vision of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who aims to make Anambra the entertainment hub of the Southeast and Nigeria.
He further revealed their plan to use the event to identify and groom budding talent who can represent the state in national and international sporting competitions.
"We returned home to contribute positively to the state's development, supporting the governor's vision."
"We aim to open Anambra State to sports and develop homegrown talent to represent Anambra at various levels."
"The world needs to recognize Anambra's potential. We see the Lagos Marathon, where athletes from outside Nigeria excel, like those from Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, and others."
"The Anambra Marathon aspires to compete with and surpass the Lagos Marathon, currently the biggest. Through this competition, we aim to unleash Anambra's sporting potential. This will provide the Ministry with a wider pool of talent for national and international sporting events."
"Overall, we want to assist the government in talent discovery, ultimately growing the state's sports sector," he concluded.
