Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and Letsile Tebogo of Botswana were honored as World Athletics’ 2024 "Athletes of the Year" in a ceremony held in Monaco on Sunday. Both athletes secured gold medals at the Paris Olympics, marking a stellar year for their respective disciplines.
Hassan, who also received the out-of-stadium award, showcased remarkable versatility with outstanding performances on both the track and in the marathon.
Hassan’s achievements in Paris were nothing short of extraordinary. Within a week, she clinched two bronze medals in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, competing in a heat as well, before claiming a historic gold in the marathon.
Her victory in the marathon was particularly dramatic, as she outpaced Kenya’s world record holder Tigist Assefa by just three seconds. Speaking after the awards ceremony, Hassan expressed surprise at her recognition, reflecting on the competitive year and the collective brilliance of athletes worldwide.
Tebogo was celebrated for his groundbreaking achievement in the men’s 200 meters, where he became the first African to win Olympic gold in the event. Crossing the finish line in 19.46 seconds at the Stade de France, he narrowly defeated American rivals Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles.
Tebogo, who also won the men’s track award, highlighted the importance of his victory for Africa, acknowledging the support from fans and his team. The honor, he admitted, came as an unexpected surprise.
Other notable honorees included Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, who received the men’s field award after an undefeated season that saw him claim Olympic gold and set a world record of 6.26 meters. Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, just 22 years old, won the women’s field award after breaking the high jump world record with a leap of 2.10 meters and securing Olympic gold.
Additional awards went to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone for her record-breaking performance in the 400-meter hurdles, Ethiopian marathon champion Tamirat Tola, and rising stars Sembo Almayew and Mattia Furlani. The ceremony also honored the memory of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who tragically passed away earlier this year.
