Dutch cyclist Harrie Lavreysen showcased his remarkable talent by securing a sixth consecutive men's sprint gold on Sunday, extending his world championship track titles to an impressive total of 16. This latest victory comes on the heels of his earlier successes in both the men's one-kilometre time trial and the team sprint, solidifying his status as a dominant force in the sport.
Competing at Ballerup in the suburbs of Copenhagen, Lavreysen displayed his prowess in the sprint event, easily defeating fellow Dutch cyclist Jeffrey Hoogland, with whom he had previously partnered to win the team sprint. Japanese rider Kaiya Ota claimed third place, but it was clear that Lavreysen was in a league of his own, reinforcing his position as the five-time defending champion.
With this triumph, Lavreysen surpassed France's Arnaud Tournant, who held 14 world championship titles from 1997 to 2008. The 27-year-old now boasts six world team sprint titles, six individual sprint golds, three in the keirin, and one in the one-kilometre time trial, marking an extraordinary career filled with achievements in track cycling.
Looking ahead, Lavreysen's sights are set on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where he aims to break British rider Jason Kenny's record of seven Olympic titles. Meanwhile, in the women's events, Julie Leth of Denmark concluded her career on a high note, winning the points race amid a vibrant atmosphere, while Japan's Mina Sato triumphed in the women's Keirin, finishing ahead of Dutch competitor Hetty van de Wouw.
