Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, highlighted the enduring values of Olympism and the power of sports. He stated that the Olympic Day Run reinforces the global community's commitment to the principles of excellence, friendship, and respect.
Governor Douye made this assertion as Bayelsa State joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 2024 Olympic Day ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris, France, tagged "Paris 2024," scheduled from July 26th to August 11th.
The Olympic Day Run, which started from Ekeki Park and terminated at Samson Siasia Stadium, saw the participation of over 200 athletes.
Chief Igali noted that the 2024 Olympic Day celebration is a global event that continues to resonate worldwide, as the Olympic spirit promotes love, participation, competition, and strong bonds among individuals and countries.
The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Habu Gumel, represented by Mr. Patrick Ibeh, emphasized that the essence of the day was to build bridges and bring people together in peace and solidarity. He maintained that the 2024 Olympic Games would witness an unforgettable celebration of joy.
He explained that these are the first Olympic Games with full gender parity, aligning with the NOC’s agenda, and reassured sports enthusiasts that the athletes would inspire the nation and admirers.
Earlier, in a welcome address, Director of Sports at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi, noted that the day aimed to engage in exercises promoting health and fitness for all, including jogging and walking to burn calories, tone muscles, shape the body, and reduce stress.
He emphasized that the Olympic Day event was not a competition to win prizes but a reminder that exercise holds great promise in maintaining human health through sports as a way of life. He pointed out that the Sports Council would continue to focus on the path of prosperity.
According to him, over the last four years of the Prosperity administration, Bayelsa has become a title contender in both national and international events due to the dedication of athletes and coaches in the State.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of participation to all participants, along with an exhibition game featuring athletes in Karate, Boxing, Gymnastics, Langa, and Wrestling.
Also in attendance were Barrister Tare Porri, Chairman of the Sports Committee, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports Development, Mr. Grace Alagoa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Planning, Mr. Felix Asingbi, and South-South Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Essiet Ubong Sylvester, among others.
