At just 17, Australian sprinter Gout Gout continues to captivate the athletics world with his remarkable speed, reinforcing comparisons to sprint legend Usain Bolt. Competing at the Australian Championships, Gout clocked an astonishing 19.84 seconds in the 200 meters, a time that would be the second fastest in history for an under-20 athlete.
However, the tailwind exceeded the legal limit, disqualifying the result from official record status. Despite this, the performance further confirmed Gout's extraordinary potential, even as he expressed frustration about the wind conditions robbing him of a national record.
Gout’s composure was especially impressive given the high-pressure circumstances of the race, which included two false starts—one leading to the disqualification of his main rival. Still, he maintained focus and claimed gold in the final.
This was not the first time Gout had run sub-20 in the 200m or sub-10 in the 100m, though all previous times were also wind-assisted. His achievements have drawn widespread admiration, especially considering his young age and the historical significance of his times at youth levels.
The sprinter's journey is deeply rooted in resilience. Born in Australia to South Sudanese parents who fled civil war, Gout was named after his father and raised alongside six siblings. His family’s Dinka heritage, known for producing tall and athletic individuals, contributes to his powerful physique—drawing parallels with Bolt.
Initially drawn to football and rugby due to his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo, Gout was introduced to athletics by sports teacher Diane Shepard in seventh grade, who remains his coach and mentor to this day.
Gout’s rise in the sport has been rapid. By 14, he had already broken national youth records in the 100 meters, and at 15, he conquered the 200-meter record.
His breakthrough came in December 2024 at the Australian High School Championships, where he ran a wind-assisted 10.17 in the 100m and a legal 20.04 in the 200m—surpassing a 56-year-old senior national record previously held by Peter Norman.
That achievement cemented his status not just as a youth sensation but as a record-setting athlete poised to make a significant impact on the global stage.
