After a remarkable performance at the Warri Grand Prix in Asaba, Nigeria, Godson Brume, the United States-based sprinter, couldn't contain his joy as he and his teammates secured their spot in the upcoming Budapest 2023 World Championships.
Brume, who anchored Nigeria's men's 4x100m relay team, expressed profound satisfaction in seeing their efforts culminate in a resounding success on the track.
The Nigerian quartet, comprising Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Alaba Akintola, and Godson Oghenebrume, displayed outstanding teamwork and speed, clocking an impressive 38.26 seconds during the qualifying race.
Notably, this time stands as the fastest recorded by a Nigerian team in more than ten years, igniting hopes of a potential podium finish in Budapest, Hungary.
Reflecting on their achievement, Brume couldn't help but be elated about the flawless baton exchange that took place during the race.
The perfect coordination was particularly meaningful, as the Warri Grand Prix served as a platform for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Delta State Government to pay tribute to the late Dr. Awoture Eleyae, the former Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa, who recently passed away in Benin City, Edo State.
Expressing gratitude to key figures who played pivotal roles in the team's success, Brume commended AFN President Tonobok Okowa, Technical Director Samuel Onikeku, and the coaching crew, which includes Seigha Porbeni, Tony Osheku, and the seven-time Nigeria 100m queen, Endurance Ojokolo.
Their guidance, support, and unwavering belief in the team's abilities were instrumental in attaining this significant milestone.
Moreover, Brume also acknowledged the morale support and encouragement extended by Chief Solomon Ogba and all those who contributed to making the qualification for the World Championships possible.
As the team now sets its sights on Budapest, Brume and his teammate Favour Ashe will be departing for their base in the United States on Monday, while Alaba Akintola has decided to continue training in Nigeria for the highly anticipated global event.
With their spirits high and their camaraderie stronger than ever, the Nigerian men's 4x100m relay team is eagerly looking forward to showcasing their talent and determination on the world stage.
As they prepare to compete against the world's best athletes, Brume and his teammates are determined to leave an indelible mark at the Budapest 2023 World Championships, representing their nation with pride and passion.
