Glenrose Xaba secured the SPAR Grand Prix title on Sunday at the Johannesburg SPAR 10km Women’s Challenge, clocking in at 32:48. This victory marks her fourth win in the SPAR Women’s Challenge series this year. Following her were three-time SPAR Grand Prix champion Tadu Nare, who finished second in 34:00, and Ethiopian teammate Diniya Abaraya, who took third place with a time of 34:14. The trio ran together for the initial six kilometers before Xaba pulled away, running solo for the remainder of the race. Notably, she became the first South African to win the SPAR Grand Prix title since the inclusion of international runners in 2019.
Expressing her joy, Xaba stated, "I am very happy to have won the SPAR Grand Prix again." She acknowledged the sacrifices she made to achieve this victory, including prioritizing her performance over Olympic qualification. With the guidance of her coaches, Caster Semenya and Violet Semenya, she focused on the broader goals ahead. Xaba also noted the race's challenges, particularly the steep hills, but was determined to maintain a fast pace amid strong competition.
Nare reflected positively on her performance throughout the year, stating she was pleased with her efforts despite finishing behind Xaba. "Glenrose has been a tremendous athlete from the get-go and has just been getting stronger and stronger," she remarked, celebrating Xaba's dedication and hard work. Abaraya, who previously won the junior category of the SPAR Grand Prix, described the year as both rewarding and challenging, crediting Xaba and Nare for their support while acknowledging her own journey ahead.
Gerda Steyn, a multiple ultra-marathon winner who finished sixth, shared her excitement about the evolution of the SPAR Women’s Challenge races, noting the improvement in performance levels. "The addition of international runners has helped to push the South Africans," she said, highlighting the emerging talent in the sport. Xaba's coach, Caster Semenya, praised her athlete's determination and discipline, anticipating significant achievements in her future. As Xaba prepares for the Cape Town Marathon on October 19, she plans to embrace the experience, focusing on enjoyment rather than expectations, although many are hopeful for a potential national record.
