Glenrose Xaba Triumphs in SPAR Grand Prix, wins R200,000, SUV

Posted : 06 November 2024

Glenrose Xaba has had an exceptional year, achieving remarkable success and reaping the rewards for her efforts. The South African athlete made history as the first to win the SPAR Grand Prix since 2019, a year that marked the inclusion of international athletes in the series. Xaba's victory also makes her the first South African to claim the prestigious title again since she won it in 2018. At the awards ceremony, she was awarded R200,000 in prize money, with an additional R75,000 for being the top South African finisher in the series. Furthermore, she received the keys to a Proton SUV X50, which she can drive for a year.

Xaba's determination played a significant role in her success. In a strategic decision guided by her mentor, Caster Semenya, and coach Violet Raseboya, Xaba chose to focus on the SPAR Grand Prix instead of attempting to qualify for the Olympic Games. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude to both Semenya and Raseboya for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the year. Her dedication paid off as she finished the SPAR Challenge series with a perfect score of 120 points, winning all four races with maximum bonus points.

In addition to her SPAR Grand Prix triumph, Xaba's year included a major achievement in marathon running. She won the Cape Town Marathon, setting a new national record by surpassing Gerda Steyn's previous best on her debut marathon. Semenya, who has closely mentored Xaba, believes that the 20-year-old has a bright future in athletics. Semenya praised Xaba's discipline, determination, and ability to take instruction, expressing confidence in her continued success.

The SPAR Grand Prix series saw strong competition, with Tadu Nare, a three-time winner, finishing third, just behind Diniya Abaraya, who took second place. Abaraya also won the junior category and received a prize of R100,000, while Nare earned R50,000. Cacisile Sosibo finished fourth overall and was awarded R50,000 as the second South African in the standings. SPAR National PR Manager Mpudi Maubane congratulated all the top athletes, acknowledging their dedication and inspiring efforts. She confirmed that the 2025 SPAR Grand Prix Series will be even bigger and better, with hopes to continue empowering women and developing road running in South Africa.
