Giro D'italia Donne Final Stage: Chiara Consonni wins last stage, Annemiek Van Vleuten captures the Giro Donne for a fourth time
Posted : 09 July 2023
On the final stage of the 2023 Giro d'Italia Donne, Chiara Consonni secured a sprint victory, while Annemiek van Vleuten claimed her fourth overall win at the race.
With a comfortable lead, Van Vleuten maintained her position and will now participate in the Tour de France Femmes to defend her yellow jersey.
The straightforward final stage covered a 127km course across Sardinia, and the peloton's big teams controlled the race to prevent any significant breaks.
Ahead of the stage, the main classifications were practically decided, with Van Vleuten holding a substantial lead in the mountains, points, and general classifications. Iris Monticolo and Anna Kiesenhofer attempted breakaways, but the peloton eventually caught up with them. Liane Lippert made a brief solo effort but was reeled in before the fast run-in to the finish.
In the chaotic sprint finish, Chiara Consonni made her move early and managed to hold off Marianne Vos to claim the victory. Consonni dedicated her win to teammate Marta Bastianelli, who retired after the stage.
Annemiek van Vleuten completed the race with the bunch, securing her overall victory and expressing gratitude to her team for their support. She now looks forward to recharging before the Tour de France.
