Geraint Thomas seeks Vuelta a España victory, narrowly missing Giro d'Italia

Posted : 25 August 2023
Geraint Thomas, the 37-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider, is determined to give his all in one of the most challenging Vuelta a España races in recent years. Despite narrowly missing victory in the Giro d'Italia earlier this year, Thomas remains resolute in his commitment to his cycling career. He views the end of his career as the opportune time to fully dedicate himself to his pursuits. As the Vuelta begins with a team time trial in Barcelona, Thomas is motivated to seize the chance for success.

Thomas acknowledges the difficulties of being away from his family due to training camps and competitions, but he hasn't yet made a decision about his future and a contract for 2024. He expressed his hopes that a decision would be made soon. While the challenges are evident, Thomas remains focused on his cycling goals, emphasizing that there will be time for leisure in his next chapter of life.

The Vuelta a España, known as 'El Clasico' this year due to its start in Barcelona and finish in Madrid, boasts an impressive lineup of talent similar to the 'galacticos' in Spanish football. The race spans 3,154km across 21 stages, including challenging terrains like the Pyrenees and the Col du Tourmalet climb. Notably, Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar is absent from this strong lineup.

Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vingegaard, and Remco Evenepoel are among the riders participating in the Vuelta. Vingegaard aims to add another Grand Tour win to his season after his success in the Tour de France. Evenepoel, despite withdrawing from the Giro due to Covid, has shown impressive form by becoming the time trial world champion.

Thomas and his teammate Egan Bernal are also in the mix, but the strong field makes podium placements a challenging endeavor. With recent changes in Ineos, including the departure of top riders, speculation arises about potential high-profile signings, possibly including Evenepoel.

The Vuelta offers a platform for British riders to make their mark, with Hugh Carthy, Lewis Askey, and Sean Flynn among the prospects. The race promises excitement as riders vie for victory in the challenging stages and demanding terrains.
