Gabrielzinho Completes Golden Treble at Paris Paralympics

Posted : 03 September 2024

At the Paris Paralympics on Monday, Brazilian swimmer Gabrielzinho achieved a remarkable feat by securing his third gold medal, this time in the 200 meters freestyle S2 final. The 22-year-old, who is missing both arms and hands and has atrophied legs, clocked 3:58.92 to outpace neutral athlete Vladimir Danilenko. This victory follows his earlier successes in the 100m and 50m backstroke events, fulfilling his goal of a golden treble.

Italian sprinter Valentina Petrillo made history as the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Games, finishing second in her T12 400 meters heat. Despite running a personal best of 57.58 seconds, she did not advance past the semifinals due to her third-place finish. Petrillo, who has Stargardt disease, faced tough competition but managed to make a significant impact in her event.

On the track, Costa Rican Sherman Guity set a Paralympic record of 10.65 seconds in the men's T64 100m, winning gold ahead of Italy’s Maxcel Amo Manu and Germany’s Felix Streng. Guity, who was thrilled with his performance, bested a strong field in what was a highly competitive final. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Ezra Frech, an above-the-knee amputee, clinched gold in the T63 100m with a personal best of 12.06 seconds and expressed his intention to add another gold in the high jump.

In other events, France's Alexis Hanquinquant retained his triathlon title in the PTS4 category, and Japan's wheelchair rugby team claimed their first Paralympics gold by defeating the USA 48-41. The triathlon was delayed by a day due to water quality concerns, but Hanquinquant's victory capped off a perfect Games for him.
