French gymnast Melanie de Jesus dos Santos embarks on transformative journey towards Paris 2024

Posted : 16 September 2023
Over a year ago, Melanie de Jesus dos Santos, a prominent figure in French Gymnastics, made the decision to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics outside of France. Now, at 23 years old, she is content with her gymnastics journey and life.

After a successful outing at last month's U.S. Classic, where she became the first foreign gymnast to compete as a guest, de Jesus dos Santos expressed her happiness and pride in herself. She achieved the second-highest All-Around score at the event, second only to Simone Biles.

Currently based in Texas, de Jesus dos Santos is returning to Europe for upcoming competitions. She plans to participate in the Paris World Challenge Cup, where she will compete in Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise.

Following that, she will head to Belgium for the crucial World Championships in Antwerp, which serve as the main qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The past few years have been a whirlwind for de Jesus dos Santos, who became the European All-Around champion in 2019, the first Frenchwoman to achieve this since 2005.

Her performance at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics was noteworthy, with strong finishes in team events and individual apparatus. After the Olympics, she faced a decision: continue in gymnastics or consider other options. She chose a unique path when invited by Simone Biles to join a "tour of champions" across the USA.

This experience proved transformative, leading de Jesus dos Santos to relocate to Texas for training under the guidance of Biles and her French coaches, Cecile Canqueteau-Landi and Laurent Landi. She wanted to explore American gymnastics and has since seen significant improvements in her skills and overall quality of gymnastics.

With less than a year until the Paris 2024 Games, a "new Melanie" is emerging, offering promise for the upcoming World Championships in Antwerp and the home Olympics in Paris.
