Kenyan long-distance runner Kibiwott Kandie has been suspended by the World Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for failing to comply with drug testing regulations. The 28-year-old, who previously held the world 10km record and won bronze in the 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games, is accused of evading, refusing, or failing to submit to sample collection.
If found guilty, he could face a four-year ban, a significant setback for an athlete who set a world half-marathon record of 57:32 in Valencia in 2020.
Kandie’s case follows a series of doping-related suspensions among Kenyan athletes. In February 2024, Michael Saruni, a former African indoor 800m record holder, was banned for four years after allegedly sending an imposter for a drug test.
Similarly, Rhonex Kipruto, another former world 10km record-holder, was banned until 2029 due to irregularities in his Athlete Biological Passport, which the AIU determined were a result of doping violations.
Despite his current suspension, Kandie has had a distinguished career, securing a silver medal at the 2020 World Half Marathon Championships behind Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo.
He has also claimed victories in road and half-marathon races across various countries, including Brazil, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. The AIU's decision casts uncertainty over his future in the sport as the investigation into his case progresses.
