Federation seeks government support for training, certification, for Powerlifting

Posted : 24 October 2024

The Powerlifting Federation of Nigeria (PFN) has urged the government at various levels to support the sport's growth at the grassroots by ensuring access to training and certification.

Charles Ezenwann, National President of PFN, stated this in an exclusive interview in Lagos.

He said promoting the sport requires a multi-faceted approach.

Ezenwann explained that the government must also focus on talent identification and development to nurture young para powerlifters through scholarships and mentorship programs.

"As the President of the Powerlifting Federation of Nigeria, I believe promoting the sport at the grassroots level requires a multi-faceted approach.

"Training and certification must be upheld. The government can help by providing coaches to train athletes and ensure accessibility and expertise.

"There should be community engagement, collaborations among local organizations, NGOs, and disability groups to establish powerlifting clubs.

"Introducing powerlifting to schools should also be considered, focusing on inclusive sports and disability awareness.

"Working with government agencies, corporate sponsors, and international organizations to secure funding and resources should also be prioritized," he said.

Ezenwann added that media support would play a significant role in increasing the sport's visibility.

He emphasized the importance of utilizing social media, television, and radio platforms to showcase the achievements of Nigerian para powerlifters, which would boost interest in the sport and create more visibility.

Despite progress, the president noted that powerlifting still faces challenges, including infrastructure deficits, lack of funds, limited awareness, restricted international participation, stigma, and discrimination.
