University of Lagos athletics coach Fumi Otegbeye says the target of the leading citadel of learning in the country at the 11th All Africa University Games is to emerge as the overall winners of the competition.

Otegbeye expressed confidence that the efforts the management of the institution has put into hosting the championship will yield positive results, with the University topping the medals table.

"We’ve prepared adequately for these Games, and the University management has also invested a lot of resources and logistics to make it a seamless and memorable championship.

"Our target is to emerge as the overall winners of the competition, not by cheating but by hard work, and I believe that the adequate preparation we’ve done will help us achieve that objective."

Coach Otegbeye identified athletics, scrabble, chess, and volleyball as some of the sports where they’ll have a medal haul. She described some of the benefits of the Games, including enabling students to interact and share socio-cultural ideas with their counterparts from other countries on the continent, as well as talent identification among other benefits.

"The benefits of the tournament are enormous. As you can see, we’re expecting excitement and a lot of social interaction between students from various universities on the continent. As the Games progress, they will socialize, interact, and share intercultural ideas.

"The Games will also help us find good athletes to represent the continent in intercontinental competitions, as well as discover talents that will take over from our aging athletes," she stressed.

She advised her athletes to approach the Games with boldness and confidence, as they are well-prepared for the challenge.
