FASU Games President appeals for reduction of $200 Dollars appearance fee of athletes

Posted : 30 August 2024

The President and Chairman of the organizing committee of the Federation of African University Games (FASU), Mohammed Bawa, has appealed for a reduction in the appearance fees for prospective athletes to allow for greater participation.

Bawa also praised the grassroots-driven vision of the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh's administration.

He urged the Minister to provide the Nigerian team with the necessary training equipment, emphasizing that this would give them the critical experience needed to prepare for the games and make them more competitive.

Bawa, noting that the mandatory visa fee of $200 was too high, appealed to the Minister to work with his counterpart in the Ministry of Interior to grant a waiver for students.

Such a waiver, he said, would increase the mass participation of students from various African countries.

However, the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, pledged his support for the FASU Games, which are scheduled to take place in Nigeria in September.

Speaking while receiving a delegation from the organizing committee, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Abuja, the Minister assured them that the ministry would do everything within its power to ensure that the games are successfully hosted by the country.

Addressing the current state of the NUGA games, he advised the committee to look inward and examine what made NUGA such a huge success in the past.

Enoh assured the delegation of the ministry's willingness to provide the Nigerian team with access to its facilities. He noted that the presence and use of high-performance centers are crucial for distinguishing successful countries from those that are not, adding that sports should be cooperative and collaborative at local, sub-national, and national levels.

The Minister expressed the determination of the Ministry under his leadership to revive school sports in the country due to its immense benefits.

He assured that after the ongoing Paralympic Games, he will lead a delegation from the ministry to visit his counterpart in the Ministry of Education to explore ways both ministries could collaborate for the development of school sports.
