Posted : 14 July 2023
Day one of the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo saw impressive performances from athletes across various events.

In the men's discus qualification, Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania easily secured his spot in the final with a throw of 61.42m, surpassing the required mark of 58.50m.

Alekna expressed satisfaction with his performance, despite a slight slip in his first attempt.

Silja Kosonen of Finland dominated the women's hammer qualification with a first-round throw of 71.33m. With previous world U20 and European U20 titles to her name, Kosonen is optimistic about clinching another age group crown in Saturday's final.

Keely Hodgkinson from Great Britain, known for her success in the 800m event, ventured into the women's 400m and comfortably advanced through the first round.

Despite the challenges of adapting to a different race, Hodgkinson viewed this competition as valuable practice and an opportunity to compete against equally talented athletes.

In the men's 100m heats, N'Ketia Seedo of the Netherlands led the way in the women's division with a serene victory in her heat.

She finished in 11.34 seconds, closely followed by Greece's Polyniki Emmanouilidou, the fastest qualifier with a time of 11.32 seconds and a slight tailwind.

Sofie Dokter, also from the Netherlands, made an impressive start in the women's heptathlon.

Achieving a personal best of 1.89m in the high jump and a solid performance in the 100m hurdles, Dokter took the early lead with 2078 points.

Saga Vanninen from Finland, a two-time world U20 heptathlon champion, closely trailed in second place.

In other events, Alida Van Daalen from the Netherlands excelled in the women's shot put qualifiers with a distance of 15.99m, while Marleen Mulla from Estonia advanced in the women's pole vault with a height of 4.20m.

Additionally, Matthew Stonier from Great Britain secured his place in the men's 1500m final, and Daniela Garcia of Spain emerged victorious in the women's 800m heats, progressing to the final.
