European Athletics U23 Championships Day 2: Charles Hicks wins 5000m final

Posted : 14 July 2023
Charles Hicks secured a swift British 5000m double by winning the men's 5000m final at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo. Following Megan Keith's triumph in the women's race, Hicks displayed strength and speed in a controlled performance.

This victory completed a personal treble for Hicks, who had previously claimed the European U23 cross country title in 2021 and 2022.

From the start, Hicks took the lead and maintained it throughout the race. Initially, Finland's Eemil Helander, Norway's Abdullahi Dahir Rabi, and Denmark's Joel Ibler Lilleso, who were training partners, kept pace with Hicks for the first two kilometers.

However, by the three-kilometer mark, Rabi and Lilleso dropped out, leaving Hicks in a head-to-head battle with Helander, the home favorite.

In the final 600 meters, Hicks increased his pace and created a gap between himself and Helander, ultimately winning in a stadium record time of 13:35.07.

Helander showed determination and secured the silver medal, achieving a new personal best of 13:40.15. Hicks' teammate, Will Barnicoat, made a last lap burst to claim bronze in 13:45.24, also setting a personal best.

Reflecting on his performance, Hicks said he was prepared to run aggressively from the start and was pleased to seize the opportunity. While he had hoped to push harder, he acknowledged that races do not always go as planned and expressed satisfaction with the win.

Helander, who had narrowly missed the podium in previous junior championships, expressed his joy at finally winning a silver medal.

Due to ankle issues, he and his coach made the decision to focus on the 5000 meters in these championships instead of his usual event, the 3000m steeplechase. He emphasized the importance of continuing Finland's long-distance running traditions and felt proud to contribute to the legacy of Finnish medalists.
