Posted : 16 July 2023
France enjoyed a triumphant night at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo, claiming three gold medals. Sasha Zhoya, the charismatic French hurdler, secured victory in a thrilling race against Italian rival Lorenzo Ndele Simonelli in the men's 110m hurdles. Zhoya just edged ahead by the penultimate barrier and won by 0.04 seconds, while fellow French athlete Erwann Cinna took the bronze.
Marie-Julie Bonnin added to France's success by winning gold in the women's pole vault. She cleared 4.50m at the third attempt, and with her Belgian competitor failing at the same height, Bonnin secured the victory. Norway's Kitty Friele Faye won the bronze with a personal best of 4.40m.
The third gold for France came in the men's triple jump, won by Simon Gore. He achieved a distance of 16.40m in the fourth round to defeat his rivals, including Sweden's Gabriel Wallmark, who won the silver with a jump of 16.24m, and Türkiye's Batuhan Cakir, who took the bronze with a best of 16.16m.
For Sasha Zhoya, the victory marked a welcome return to the top of the podium after winning world and European U20 gold in 2021. Despite acknowledging that the race was not his cleanest, Zhoya was thrilled to secure the first-place finish.
Marie-Julie Bonnin also improved on her previous performance at the European U20 Championships and claimed the gold in the women's pole vault. Simon Gore's success in the men's triple jump added to France's golden night at the championships.
