Kenyan runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi impressed with the fastest 800 meters time of the day, clocking 1:44.64 in his heat on Wednesday. Despite the absence of Tokyo medalists, Wanyonyi faces strong competition, including this year's fastest runner, Algerian Djamel Sedjati, world champion Marco Arop of Canada, and French contender Gabriel Tual. All three, along with Wanyonyi, set personal bests under 1:42 last month, indicating peak form.
Just days after celebrating his 20th birthday, Wanyonyi led from the start and held off Italy's Catalin Tecuceanu, who finished with a time of 1:44.80. Sedjati, unbeaten this season, won his heat with a time of 1:45.84. He started from the back but surged to the lead with 50 meters remaining, showing minimal fatigue as he finished.
French runner Gabriel Tual, cheered on by the home crowd, secured first place in his heat with a time of 1:45.13, narrowly beating Ireland's Mark English. Tual expressed his gratitude for the crowd's support, describing it as a powerful motivator that helped him pace himself for a strong finish.
In other heats, Canadian Marco Arop finished second with a time of 1:45.74, behind Belgium's Eliott Crestan, who clocked 1:45.51. Britain's Ben Pattison won the fifth heat in 1:45.56, while Spain's Mohamed Attaoui took the last race of the day with 1:44.81. The top three from each heat advanced to the semifinals on Friday, while the remaining runners will compete in Thursday's repechage round.
