Britain’s Elliot Giles set a new road mile world record of 3:51.3 while winning the New Balance KO Meile in Düsseldorf. Giles, an Olympic 800m semi-finalist, managed to hold off a strong challenge from US middle-distance runner Yared Nuguse, who took bronze in the men's 1500m at the Paris Games. Nuguse also posted an impressive time of 3:51.9, surpassing the previous record of 3:56.13 set by American Hobbs Kessler at the 2023 World Road Running Championships in Riga.
Both Giles and Nuguse bettered the pending ratification mark of 3:54.6 set this year by Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the Olympic 800m champion. While the road mile world record was officially recognized only a year ago, it has a storied history, with Sydney Maree holding the Fifth Avenue mile record in New York since 1981 with a time of 3:47.6.
The men’s track mile world record remains at 3:43.13, set by Morocco’s Hicham el Guerrouj in 1999. Giles’ best track time is 3:51.63. Notably, the Fifth Avenue mile race in the US, while significant, is not eligible for record purposes; last year, Josh Kerr ran 3:47.9 there, and Britain’s Laura Muir holds the women's road mile record with a time of 4:14.8 from her victory in 2022.
