Jamaican sprint sensation Elaine Thompson-Herah, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the women's 100m and 200m, has announced her withdrawal from defending her titles at the upcoming Paris Games due to an Achilles injury. The 31-year-old, who clinched double gold in both the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Games, made the decision after withdrawing from this week's Jamaican trials in Kingston.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Thompson-Herah expressed deep disappointment at missing out on the Olympics but emphasized prioritizing her health over sports. She had initially aimed to compete in the 100m at the trials but had already withdrawn from the 200m event earlier.
The sprinter's injury woes surfaced during a recent competition in New York, where she suffered a torn Achilles and had to be assisted off the track. Despite her determination to recover in time for the trials, subsequent medical assessments confirmed the seriousness of the injury, revealing a small tear in her Achilles tendon.
Looking ahead, Thompson-Herah remains resolute about continuing her sprinting career, despite the setback of missing the Olympics. Her notable achievements include holding the second-fastest 100m time in history at 10.54 seconds, set in Eugene, Oregon in 2021, trailing only Florence Griffith-Joyner's legendary world record from 1988.
