The Ekiti State Athletics Association has selected 14 athletes to represent the state at the South West Alliance U-18 Games in Lagos from March 25 to March 29.
The athletes were selected from a pool of about 100 athletes who attended the trials at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti.
The seven male athletes selected are Ojumu Ayomide, Esan Tosin, Oche Sunday, Adedayo Ayomikun, Sunday Ibitoye, Oluwaseun Oguntumibi, and Victor Agbaje.
The female athletes selected are Deborah Adeniyi, Ogundare Olajesu, Wura Oyebanji, Oyinloye Oyindamola, Adetomi Adebowale, Favour Saliu, and Aregbesola Ayomide.
The athletes will compete in the 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m (male and female), and the 4 x 400m mixed relay.
Addressing the athletes, the Director of Individual Sports at the Ekiti State Sports Commission, Adekunle Adewumi, commended them for their determination and resilience during the trials.
He stated that the results and their attitude toward the competition showed their readiness to excel in the upcoming South West Games.
Adewumi assured them that those who made the final list were selected based on merit. He advised those who did not make the list not to be discouraged, as there would be many future opportunities to represent the state. He encouraged the selected athletes to remain disciplined and train hard to excel in Lagos.
In another development, the Ekiti Athletics Association has set a new date for the National Sports Festival trials.
The trials, originally scheduled for March 19, will now take place on April 2 at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti.
