Double Age-Group World Champions to Be Crowned at UIPM 2024 Pentathlon U19 World Championships

Posted : 23 September 2024

The prestigious opportunity of becoming a double age-group world champion could be realized at this week’s UIPM 2024 Pentathlon U19 World Championships, which will be live-streamed for fans. The fast-evolving world of youth Modern Pentathlon, which introduced a five-discipline format including Obstacle in 2023, offers fresh challenges for this year’s athletes. With all U19 individual medallists from last year's competition in Istanbul having moved on to the Junior ranks, the stage is set for last year’s U17 stars to step up and compete for top honors in Druskininkai, Lithuania.

Among the promising competitors, Egypt's 13-year-old Farida Khalil stands out, aiming for another golden triumph after securing two consecutive U17 world titles. Khalil’s quest to follow in the footsteps of Egypt’s Malak Ismail, last year’s U19 champion and Paris 2024 Olympian, is one of the most anticipated storylines. She will face stiff competition from Germany’s Charlotte Keister, Italy’s Annachiara Allara, and Nadja Farmand, all of whom claimed medals at last year’s U17 level. However, European U19 champion Zora Zeman of Hungary, who dominated the continental championships earlier this year, is a strong contender to claim the global title.

On the men’s side, attention turns to 2023 U17 world champion Mathis Issaka Idé-large of France, who is expected to perform well alongside other promising athletes. The European U19 Championships in Barcelona showcased Hungarian Attila Marschall and Czechia’s Matej Kornel, who finished with gold and silver respectively, positioning them as likely favorites. With strong representation from Korea, Mexico, and perennial competitors from Europe and Egypt, the men's competition is shaping up to be fiercely contested.

With Obstacle making its second appearance at the global U19 level, expectations are high for thrilling performances. Local favorite, 15-year-old Lukas Lagunavicius of Lithuania, who recently set a U17 world record, will look to impress on home soil. The championships kick off on September 24 with the relay events and culminate in the individual finals on September 28, followed by the Mixed Relay on September 29.
